Research in Canada

Wyeth is a world leader in the research and
development of innovative, high-quality health
care products.

Clinical Research & Development

Our Montreal facilities have been the birthplace of a number of key Wyeth products, including Premarin®, a leading product in women's health care for over 60 years and Rapamune®, an innovative drug for transplant recipients.

Our Clinical R&D facility, opened in 1989, is located within the Montreal manufacturing facilities and employs more than 50 people. Our clinical research activities include work in osteoporosis and vasomotor symptoms of menopause, hemophilia, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease, pain management, breast cancer and kidney cancer, immunology, infectious diseases, asthma and arthritis and vaccines. We are currently conducting trials on a number of promising drugs, some examples include:

  • a vaccine to help prevent Alzheimer's disease and another to immunize infants
  • a molecule to prevent chronic constipation, which often occurs in patients who are taking opium-based products for intense pain
  • a molecule to allow patients with kidney cancer to live longer.

Our Montreal clinical research facility is also the major co-ordination centre for Wyeth clinical trials conducted in Canada. In 2008, we conducted trials in more than 250 sites across all provinces in Canada and involved almost 1500 patients.

In addition to conducting our own clinical trials, we also invest heavily in clinical research across Canada. In 2008, Wyeth contributed $10 million to clinical research programs.

Clinical Supply

The Clinical Supply division in Montreal was established in 1990 with more than 20 employees and has grown in importance to 100 employees in 2009. This division is responsible for preparing and supplying the clinical trial kits needed for the majority of Wyeth's projects worldwide. In 2008, the Clinical Supply division:

  • manufactured 9 million doses for use by patients enrolled in 40 clinical trials around the world
  • provided 70% of the clinical trial supplies for Wyeth worldwide.

Chemical Development

The Chemical Development division, established in Montreal since the 1940's, employs over 50 people, mostly university-educated chemists and engineers. The division supports the discovery and development of new small molecules in Wyeth Research, through supply of quality compounds and the development of chemical processes. Early-development products are synthesized in laboratories, while larger amounts required for pre-clinical studies are prepared in the scale-up facility. Montreal scientists and staff contribute currently to the development of innovative therapies for multiple sclerosis, atherothrombosis, women's health diseases, mental health disorders, heart disease and cancer.
